Summer on Film | Family Memories

I adore being a film photographer here in the Northern VA and DC area, so I documented our summer on film. Film is an integral part of my client experience, but I also photograph my own family on film. I actually fell in love with film when COVID first hit. I wrote a whole post on why I love film, and these reasons certainly apply to documenting everyday life. Everything from the colors to the feelings film evokes spark great delight for me.

This past summer was the first time I photographed my family solely on my 35mm film camera, as opposed to my DSLR, or digital camera. In the past, I carted around my Canon DSLR along on activities and trips, even across the pond!

My two favorite aspects of photographing my family on my 35mm film camera were: 1) It is MUCH lighter than my DSLR, and 2) I couldn’t see my images on the back of the camera. Carrying around the film camera was just easier and freeing. It inspired me to take it along everywhere!

I know many people would prefer to see their images on the back of their camera, but I felt it freeing to rely on my eye and knowledge. I also wasn’t constantly checking my camera to see how images turned out. This allowed me to enjoy living in the moment more.
