As a newborn photograher, I desire to connect with my clients so I can photograph their authentic narrative. It is a joy to listen to the families I photograph and hear their stories. One of my favorite aspects of newborn sessions is simply listening to mothers share their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences.

I adore motherhood and am honored to be a newborn photographer here in DC. The birth of a child is also the birth of a mother, and it is important to document this during my sessions. I am a firm believer that motherhood, although a large part of who I am, does not define me. It is a privilege to photograph mothers during all of my sessions.

For this introduction post, I am going to share some of my favorite things so you know more about me. You can read the short version here.

My Favorite Things

My family

My husband Zach and I have two beautiful children, Perry and Rosie. Zach is quite the comedian and truly makes me laugh everyday. Perry is full of so much energy – it can be quite hard to take his picture (see tips on photographing your little ones here). Rosie adores Perry and can usually be found dancing or eating (a gal after my own heart!).

I love being a mother but it is only a part of who I am, and I am proud of that. Women are not simple beings – we can enjoy many passions and own different parts of our identities. My family grounds me, and for that I am truly thankful.

Nostalgia

Nostalgia is a broad term, but I think it ties in easily to being a DC newborn photographer. Babies and children remind us of the innocence of the past, and I think many mothers feel nostalgic when they hold a newborn baby.

My nostalgia is also harbored in old homes and things that are antiquated. Before kids, Zach and I would go antiquing every weekend. Our home is full of vintage finds, and I love that we own things that were once loved or belonged to someone else. I think being fascinated with other people’s stories is another reason I am a photographer here in the DC area.

Film has a nostalgic aesthetic, so this a large reason why I choose it as my medium of choice. I delve into more details about why I am a DC Film Photographer here.

And I cannot forget how much I adore the fashion of the old world. Bring me all the pastel dresses and vintage lace!

Travel

Oh, to travel again. At the time I am writing this, we are still in the throes of the COVID pandemic. Both Zach and I are avid travelers, so being confined to our homes has been quite the challenge. We typically travel to one new location every year and have even sported a baby around Europe. I have traveled to 15 countries and still have so many more on my list!

My favorite part about traveling is immersing myself in other cultures. I enjoy hopping through museums and touring noted attractions, but you will ultimately find me sitting in a cafe (with coffee in hand), soaking in my surroundings. Yet another reason I am a photographer…

Legacy – what makes me a newborn photographer

I have become quite intentional with my time, things, and lifestyle since becoming a mother. Legacy is something that is important to everyone, in one way or another.

Perusing family albums during the holidays or walking by portraits on the wall – these seemingly little activities hold so much importance. They don’t only hold importance to us, but to our children, as well. Photographs take us back to a place, moment, or feeling. Holding on to connection and relationship with others is always important, now more than ever.

Music

This is a little known fact about me, but I have both a bachelor and master’s degree in music. Music was one of my first loves, and it still is a strong part of my identity. Like photographs, music transports us to a different time or emotion. It is a universal language that is an essential component to all cultures. Since I adore soaking in culture, music opens up this pathway even more.

Do you share any of my favorite things? I would love to hear, so please leave a comment below.
