These Great Falls park photos with one year old Addison were so, so fun! Great Falls park in Maryland is a beautiful photo shoot location. There is water, sand, trees, seashells – you name it! All of these unique features not only make you feel like you are far away from the DMV, but they also add some really fun exploration for kids. The water at the little beach we photograph at is a little cove, so it’s shallow and still.
This was Addison’s one year session, and we had previously photographed her newborn session and maternity session. The one year session is so special because it is the culmination of that first year of life. I find it’s often fairly emotional for the parents!
We began the session by playing near the sand, then slowly looking for seashells, and then we ended the session in the water – how fun is that?
Great Falls park is a beautiful location from spring through fall. Spring boasts nice temperatures, summer makes the water tempting to play in, and fall has gorgeous foliage on display.
A couple things to note about this location – first, there is about a quarter of a mile walk from the parking lot to the small beach. For children, I usually recommend bringing a stroller so the kids don’t lose all their energy (and get too independent) along the way.
The second aspect to keep in mind is that there is a hill from the trail to the beach that has somewhat steep steps. The hill is not what I would consider difficult hiking, but this is just something to keep in mind if you are pregnant or have grandparents with you. Again, the hill is not huge and totally doable.
Lastly, I like the light at sunset best for Great Falls park. Children often do best in morning time for photos because they have more energy and are usually in good spirits.
