The Hains Point cherry blossoms are a stunning alternative way to enjoy DC’s cherry blossom scene. The Tidal Basin gets all the attention come early spring, but Hains Point boasts gorgeous Kwanzan cherry trees.

These pink, puffy blossoms typically bloom about two weeks after the Yoshino cherry trees at the Tidal Basin. The Kwanzan cherry trees are a brighter shade of pink and a bit larger; they are also sturdier than the Yoshino cherry trees, meaning that they can withstand rain and/or storms better than the Tidal Basin cherry trees. They usually bloom for about a week.

I met this sweet family on an early April morning for their milestone session. I had photographed their Severna Park newborn session a few months prior and their maternity session at a Maryland historic home before that. Baby boy was six months old for this milestone session, which is such a sweet age. I love the adorable expressions and details at this age.

The Hains Point cherry blossoms are never crowded compared to the Tidal Basin, making this location perfect for family sessions. In fact, we had the grove to ourselves on this April morning. Parking is also quite easy – I usually have my clients park in Parking Lot C and then walk into Hains Point Park from there.
