The DC Kwanzan cherry blossoms often don’t get as much love as the infamous Yoshino cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin, and I’m here to say – I don’t know why! The Kwanzan cherry blossoms in DC are absolutely stunning!
The blossoms are puffier and pinker, and the BEST part is you don’t deal with any crowds. If you’ve ever been to the Tidal Basin during peak cherry blossom bloom, you know how crazy crowded it gets (even at sunrise!). The Kwanzan cherry trees can be peacefully enjoyed without having to worry about traffic, parking, or crowds.
Another great aspect about the Kwanzan blooms is that they typically bloom 2-3 weeks after the Tidal Basin blossoms, so temperatures tend to be warmer. I’ve photographed sessions at the Tidal Basin when it’s 30 degrees, so a couple weeks make all the difference! The Yoshino cherry trees bloom around mid-late March, whereas the Kwanzan cherry trees bloom in early to mid April.
Because they are so accessible, I often will suggest the Kwanzan cherry blossoms as a perfect alternative to the Tidal Basin. For this extended family session, I knew accessibility and ease was important. We don’t want to worry about parking difficulties, 4 am wake-up’s, chilly temperatures, or long walks when dealing with a lot of people.
