This winter maternity shoot in the snow was on my bucket list for the longest time! Last year I was supposed to photograph a snowy maternity session, but we ended up getting ZERO snow – such a bummer!

This expecting mama was onboard with being ready to jump last minute if there was snow in the forecast, and so we were able to get this winter maternity shoot in with a few inches on the ground!

It was COLD, so I have a few suggestions if you are interested in a maternity session in winter.

Wear layers

Wear fleece-lined leggings or tights underneath your dress and double layer your socks! Your feet will be in the snow, so you want to ensure that you have multiple layers for your feet, too!

Bring hand and foot warmers

Your extremities will be freezing, so have hand and foot warmers with you! We put foot warmers in our shoes and had hand warmers to use in-between shots. You will definitely need them!

Bring a shawl

Incorporate a shawl or sweater to help warm your arms (even if you have long sleeves on!). Any extra layers will be helpful in the cold.

Mentally prepare

Lastly, mentally prepare to be cold! It was much colder than we expected, even though temperatures were right around freezing. We worked quickly and got the entire maternity shoot done in about 30 minutes. Be prepared to cold so you know what to expect.

Have a little reward or treat ready for afterwards, like a hot chocolate or coffee! Although outdoor sessions in winter are cold, they can be so worth it for the scenery!
