What to Wear for Your Washington DC Newborn Session

One of the largest worries my clients come to me with is what to wear for their Washington DC newborn session. Most people do not naturally have dresses for photo sessions already in their wardrobes. Naturally, this can cause confusion or indecision on what to wear.

The overarching idea to aim for is to look and feel comfortable. I understand how busy and hectic those early days are, so as part of the experience I provide clients, I offer an array of dresses from my client wardrobe. Additionally, you can choose to add on hair and make-up so you won’t need to lift a finger. Chances are, you will be running on very little sleep. The thought of getting myself ready and coordinating my crew was overwhelming when I had my children, so I 1) took four hours to get ready with my first, and 2) skipped out on a newborn session altogether with my second (one of my biggest regrets).

Below are some of my favorite dresses for newborn sessions. Some I already own as part of my client wardrobe; others, I am happy to add on if you are interested in wearing for your session.

Nothing Fits But Dresses

I included Nothing Fits But in my post on best dresses for maternity sessions, too, and with good reason. These gorgeous, timeless dresses are versatile for all phases of motherhood. I have literally worn the same dress in pregnancy, postpartum, and “normal” times! They truly flatter every figure. Each dress can be worn in a number of ways, and they simply create a nostalgic aesthetic, one of my favorite things.

Hill House Dresses

These Hill House Nap Dresses are both elegant and cozy. The exude elegance and relaxation at the same time. Again, they are comfortable and flattering – two of the most important factors for dresses for newborn sessions.

Red Dress Afternoon Calm

This dress photographs beautifully. It is flattering, and like the dresses above, fits for all stages of motherhood. The petite blue florals give an elegant and classic aesthetic.

Baltic Born

Baltic Born offers a wide array of dresses that are postpartum and bump-friendly. Additionally, many of the dresses work great for nursing, making them perfect for a newborn session. Baltic Born provides many different hues and styles that are flowing and photography beautifully.
