The National Arboretum Washington DC may not appear like the obvious choice for a cherry blossom photo session. Everyone knows about the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin, but the cherry blossoms at the National Arboretum are one of Washington DC’s best-kept secrets! There are over 30 varieties of cherry blossom trees in the arboretum. That means that even if you missed the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms, you’ll likely see some still in bloom at the National Arboretum during the spring months!
A Cherry Blossom Photo Session at the National Arboretum in Washington DC Involves Coordination
This darling family wanted blooms for their session. Although Tidal Basin cherry blossom sessions can be stunning, the National Arboretum in DC provided the perfect light and backdrop for this DC family photo session. The Tidal Basin cherry blossoms also involve a lot of coordination since they are only in peak bloom for a few days to a week. Since the National Arboretum has many varieties, we were able to be a little more flexible with timing.
Additionally, we did not need to worry about crowds! The National Arboretum in Washington DC was empty, and we could really select exactly where we wanted to photograph with the cherry blossom trees. Being a DC Family Photographer during cherry blossom season is tough, but this was such an easy cherry blossom photo session!
Morning Time is Key for a Smooth DC Family Session
It was an early April morning when we photographed at one of the cherry blossom groves, and we were gifted with the most beautiful light! I find morning time to be the best time to photograph little ones. Not only is the light soft and flattering, but little ones tend to be in their best spirits earlier in the day. I love when clients trust me with an early start for a session because it truly pays off! Both big sister and little brother were full of smiles and giggles, and it showed! Early morning sessions require more preparation, but I truly cannot recommend them enough. I have never had a client regret starting early.
Mom wore a dress from the client wardrobe and had her hair and make-up done by Nancy Gaona. This helped align with my light and airy film style.
