Did you know that photographs boost self-esteem in children? When deciding to offer customized artwork for my clients this year, I learned that there was a body of research dedicated to this idea. It makes perfect sense when you think about it.
When children see themselves in their homes, they feel validated and a sense of belonging. They feel as though they are important and deserve a place in our household. Essentially, it affirms the idea that they are important.
Do we believe that our children are more important than any other artists or art you have hanging on your walls? More important than what our children see on television and Instagram? The answer is most likely a resounding yes. Even if we tell our children they are important and valued, it is important that we show them, as well.
Judy Weiser, a psychologist, art therapist and author based in Vancouver, says that “when a child sees a family portrait with them included in the photograph they say to themselves: ‘These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.”
Think of that awkward adolescent stage when you were uncomfortable in your body. Wouldn’t seeing reassurance from those that love you most be uplifting? Our children are more important, sacred, and valued than any other landscape, graphic, model, or artist. Let’s show them.
