I read an interesting post the other day from the Holistic Psychologist that captured my attention. The post read something like “celebrate ‘good enough’ parenting.” My first thought was not super embracing of this. I mean, shouldn’t we aim to be the best possible parent to our child?
But as I continued to read the post, it began to make a lot more sense. Essentially, the idea is that it is impossible for a parent to meet all of their child’s emotional needs. It’s our job to learn how to meet our own needs as adults, anyway.
Children who develop insecure attachments with parental figures can develop rage, mental health issues, poor behaviors.
Parents who respond and are attentive, loving, and present for their children at least 50% time ensure their children develop secure attachments – and this is all we really need. So basically, if you give your child what they emotionally need 50% of the time, you are doing great.
Should we aim to be the best parents we can possibly be? Sure. But it’s okay if you’re not perfect. No one is, and that helps our children learn to adapt to the world.
