What I Want You to Know About Your Photos

I adore being a DC Family Photographer. It truly is such a joy to be able to provide families with brief glimpses into a season of their lives. As a mother myself, I know all too well that this season is truly fleeting. There are days I look at my own children and think, “wow, you grew overnight!” Parenting is not for the faint of heart, but it certainly does pull at our heartstrings.

As we enter this busy season of family photos, I want to share a small piece of wisdom I’ve learned over the years. You may already know this, and if so, wonderful! If not, I hope this helps you.

It’s not the staged, smiling photos that you will love years from now as much a the small, unstaged in-between moments captured.

Truly. Every mother wants the image of everyone looking at the camera smiling, and we will certainly get those images. Sometimes toddlers may not “cooperate” during a session (and why should they always?), so some sessions have a lot more “in-between” moments than others. But it’s these in-between images that you will find yourself drawn to years from now.

Why?

We can truly see our children in them. They are being themselves. Their two year old self. Or one year old self. Or five year old self. And we will never know that little person at that age again. So images of them in their natural state are so endearing. I promise you that.
