I could go on and on why you should have a newborn session as a DC Newborn Photographer. I previously wrote a post on why you should have a maternity session. These reasons also apply to newborn sessions.
1. Time is Fleeting.
If there is anything I have learned as a mother, it’s that time is fleeting. I’m not saying it’s not incredibly difficult – it can be easy to reflect back on these times with rose-colored lenses. Truly, these can be some of the most difficult years. However, they can also be some of the most beautiful.
I have shared before how I opted out of not having a newborn session when I had Rosie. Crazy, I know! As a DC newborn photographer, you would think I would, of course, have a newborn session. However, at the time, I was overwhelmed with all of the preparation of the new baby. And now, I deeply regret not having those photos…
I once heard a saying that goes something like this: you will meet many people in your children over the course of their lives. The person your child is at 1 is not the same person your child is at 3, 7, 12, etc. Children evolve into entirely different humans over the course of their lives. And we will never know that person who was 1 or 3 again. Cue the tears!
Once our children grow, the only thing we really have left of these people are photos and videos. How special it is to have an image of your tiny newborn grasping your hand?
2. Not only will your children change, but you will, too – yet another reason why you should have a newborn session.
Documenting motherhood and helping mothers feel seen is extremely important to me. All too often, mothers are the ones taking the photos, not the ones in them. When you look back on images of yourself with your baby, it can bring you back to the moment. You won’t necessarily remember the sleepless nights, colic, woes of breastfeeding, etc. (thanks, biology!) – you will likely remember the immense love you felt for your little one. And how special is that to remember!
3. Your children will enjoy seeing themselves (and you!) younger.
My 18 month old adores seeing herself in photos, so I assure you – your older children will, too! There is nothing like going through a baby album on birthdays or milestone occasions. It can bring such nostalgia for parents and joy for children!
Not only will children enjoy seeing themselves as babies, but they will like seeing what their parents and home looked like, too. They cannot remember this period, so images are the only way to bring it to life. How special is that!
