Figuring out how to choose your newborn photographer can be overwhelming. I love being a part of such a talented, supportive group of newborn photographers in the DC area. What I love even more is that we are all unique in many ways – not one of us is exactly like another.
We each want to serve you in the best way possible, and the first step in this process is ensuring you find a photographer who best meets your specific needs.
I outline the top points and decisions to make when looking for the best newborn photographer for you. It all comes down to what matters to you.
1. Posed studio or lifestyle in-home
Newborn photography has a wide range of styles to choose from, the two most prominent of which are posed and lifestyle. Posed photography often centers around the newborn swaddled on a beanbag, dressed in various outfits. Occasionally parents are also included in the images, and there is a more formal and posed scene arranged. Posed newborn sessions often are photographed in studios.
Lifestyle newborn photography often revolves around the family unit, so the images will include the parents and the rest of the family. They are most prominently photographed in the home of the parents but can sometimes take place in a studio. Although I have a petite garden studio, I adore photographing newborns in their homes simply because it is the most authentic narrative.
2. Photography Style
Tied in closely with newborn photography style is the actual style of the photographer. Once you figure out whether you would prefer posed or lifestyle newborn photography, think about the actual colors and light in your images.
Do you want your photographs to look more light and airy? Or would you prefer they have darkened shadows and more contrast? These are the two primary styles, with many sub-styles in-between! For instance, within the light and airy style you will find many film photographers. I photograph with film, creating beautiful, flattering, soft tones.
3. Artwork
How do you intend to use your images? Do you want the digital files alone, or would you also like to have an album and wall gallery to celebrate your little one? I strongly believe in printing images, so I provide heirloom artwork for you to peruse family albums and stroll by images of your little one in your home.
Many photographers provide the option for you to print images from online galleries, and although this does work efficiently, the quality will not be quite at the same level as if you work with a photographer who specializes in artwork. For example, I incorporate 100% cotton deckled prints – something you cannot purchase from an online gallery.
4. The Experience | What Newborn Photographers in DC Provide
Some photographers show up and shoot, send you the gallery, and call it a day. Others have a process to welcome you into a customized experience. It really depends on what you’re looking for.
