Maryland Photoshoot Locations

The MEP Experience

Today I’m going to share some of my favorite Maryland photoshoot locations. These are my tried-and-true spots, whether they offer a scenic backdrop, gorgeous light, or even better, both! Some locations are best in early morning, others are favorable closer to sunset – this usually just depends what side the sun is on at the particular location. Some locations require permits, and others don’t!

When it comes to choosing a location, I recommend thinking of a few things. First, if you are choosing a location for a family session, accessibility matters. You definitely don’t want to be in the car for longer than 45 minutes or have to walk a mile after you park. Choosing a location that is easy to access with kids is important.

Second, think of the colors and feel that you want in your photos. Are you looking for soft pastels, dark greens, or lots of bright whites? Do you want cool architecture features or more natural elements like tall grass?

Below are some of my favorite Maryland photoshoot locations!

Maryland Photoshoot Locations

Brookside Gardens

Brookside Gardens is a lovely location from early spring to late fall. Located in Silver Spring, Brookside Gardens encompasses 50 acres and has a variety of backdrops. I love the cherry blossoms (end of March-early April), tulips and hyacinths (early April), azaleas (mid-April to May), hydrangeas (summer), and the rose garden (end of spring to early fall).

The gardens are very peaceful in early mornings, so I love this option for young kids. Brookside Gardens requires a $50 photo permit and does not allow dogs.

Great Falls (Maryland)

You feel like you’re somewhere in Colorado or in the mountains when you have your photo session at Great Falls. The Maryland side of Great Falls has an adorable little beach with gorgeous rock structures in the distance and lovely seashells in the sand (perfect for little ones to explore!).

This location gets stunning light around sunset, so it’s the perfect location for a maternity session or a session with kids who can stay in good spirits later in the day! I would love to one day photograph a family in the water here (it’s still and lovely!).

The beach is a short walk from the visitor’s center. Although there is no permit required, there is a fee for parking.

Howard County Conservancy

The Howard County Conservancy in Woodstock, Maryland is a perfect field location. There is tall grass, wide open space, a stone gate, and little barn. It’s a good location to photograph at if you want lots of natural elements, and it can be quite beautiful in fall when the foliage is out. It’s a great location for a bright and airy aesthetic with lots of greens.

The Howard County Conservancy works for sunrise or sunset, and there is a photo permit fee of $150.

Riversdale Manor

Riversdale Manor is a hidden gem in the DMV. Located in Riverdale Park, Riversdale is a historic home and garden. There is a small garden that changes with the season. From tulips to peonies, the warm months tend to have some blooms! Riversdale also has a beautiful willow tree and wide open space in front of the manor.

Riversdale is an easy location with no permit required and close parking; it’s also rarely crowded, unless a special event is taking place.

Glenview Mansion

Glenview Mansion in Rockville, Maryland is another location with a historic home. Although there are not a lot of blooms at Glenview, there are stone archways and a fountain, which add an elegant touch. I prefer Glenview closer to sunset, but morning does work, as well! This location has a lot of shade, so it can be a later start morning session option.

There is no permit required for Glenview, but I recommend checking their calendar before scheduling a session to ensure there are no events taking place.
