The Tidal Basin cherry blossoms are one of the most breathtaking things I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing… and getting to do it with a family I’ve known since before their baby was even born? That’s the kind of session that stays with you forever.

There are places in this world that feel like they were made to be photographed, and the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC is absolutely one of them. I’ve photographed families all over this city and I love every corner of it. But if you asked me to point to one spot that is quintessentially DC, one place that captures the soul of this region in a single frame, it’s the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms. The way the blush-pink canopy reflects off the water, with the Jefferson Memorial rising up behind it… there is genuinely nothing else like it in the world. It’s iconic. It’s fleeting. And it’s one of my absolute favorite places to photograph the families who trust me with their stories.
This session was extra special. This family has been with me since the very beginning of their baby’s life. We photographed their maternity session when mama’s belly was full and round and glowing. We photographed their newborn session when that tiny little one was brand new and wrinkly and perfect. And now, six months later, we wrapped up their membership with this: a family session beneath the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms, with a baby who has opinions and smiles and the most kissable chubby cheeks I’ve ever seen. To watch a family grow across three sessions is one of my greatest privileges as a photographer, and this one felt like a full-circle moment I’ll carry for a long time.

When Do the Cherry Blossoms Peak?
This is the question I get every single year, and honestly, it’s the trickiest part of planning a Tidal Basin cherry blossoms session. The National Park Service releases their official peak bloom forecast at the beginning of March each year, and that’s always my first stop. Typically, peak bloom falls somewhere in the third or fourth week of March… but the trees do not follow a calendar. They follow the weather.
Some years peak bloom arrives early. Some years it runs late. Occasionally a late frost will come in and push everything back by a week or more. The NPS forecast gives us our best educated guess, and I watch it closely as soon as it drops so I can start having conversations with families who’ve booked (or are thinking about booking) a spring session. The window for truly peak bloom is short, sometimes just four or five days, so staying flexible is everything.

Three Things to Know Before Your Session
1. Get there early
Arrive by 6:15 am. I know… that’s an early alarm. But parking at the Tidal Basin disappears fast, the light is soft and golden in the morning, and the crowds haven’t arrived yet. It’s worth every minute of lost sleep, I promise.
2. Go with the flow
The Tidal Basin is a public space buzzing with early morning joggers, tourists, and fellow blossom-chasers. We lean into the energy, work around the crowds, and embrace the beautiful chaos. The magic still shows up.
3. Stay flexible on dates
This one is non-negotiable. Peak bloom can shift by a week or more from the initial forecast. When I reach out and say the window has moved up (or back), trust me and be ready to pivot. That flexibility is what makes this session possible.
If you’re considering a Tidal Basin cherry blossoms session for your family, the best thing you can do is get on my calendar before March and start watching the NPS forecast with me. I’ll be in your corner every step of the way, communicating as soon as that bloom window becomes clear. This is one of those sessions you will never regret… the images are timeless, and the memory of standing together beneath a cloud of pink blossoms with the people you love most? That stays with you.
