There’s No “Wrong Time” for a Newborn Session
If you’re thinking, what if I missed the newborn window? First of all, take a breath, because it doesn’t matter nearly as much as you think.
Babies grow so fast in the first year that capturing them at any point is meaningful. Whether your little one is 8 days old or 8 weeks old, you will look back at those photos and be so glad you did it. The rapid change of the first year is exactly why any photo session during this season is worth it.
So if you’re reading this feeling a little guilty that life got in the way and your baby is already past those sleepy first days… let it go. Let’s just book the session.

What if I Missed the Newborn Window? Here’s What You Need to Know
The biggest shift with an older newborn session? Your baby is probably going to be awake for a lot of it, and that is totally fine. Actually, it’s kind of wonderful.
When baby is a few weeks or months old, you’ll get so much more interaction in your images. Eyes open, looking up at mom, staring into the camera, maybe even giving you the tiniest hint of a smile. These are the kinds of photos that make you feel like you can actually remember exactly who your baby was in that moment, not just a swaddled little burrito (although those are precious too).
The session just has a little more life to it, which fits exactly where you are right now.

How We Set the Session Up for Success
The key to a happy older newborn session is simple: a fed, content baby.
We’ll plan your session around baby’s happiest time of day, which for most babies is the morning. Before you arrive (or before I arrive at your home), give baby a full feed, or even two. We want baby full and comfortable. We are not counting on baby being asleep, although if he or she drifts off, we will absolutely capture that too.
The goal is just good spirits, and a full belly goes a long way toward that.

What the Session Actually Looks Like
Because baby is bigger and more alert, we approach the session more like a lifestyle session. Here’s what you can expect:
We’ll capture images of you and your partner together with baby, each of you solo with baby, siblings if you have them, and baby on his or her own. The session feels natural and relaxed because it is… we’re just documenting your family as it actually exists right now.
For baby’s solo images, I’ll use a backdrop that makes sense for where baby actually is developmentally. Instead of a white beanbag (which is beautiful for a 10-day-old but can look a little awkward for a chunkier 6-week-old), I might use a Moses basket, a cozy blanket spread across the bed, or another natural setting that just fits. Everything should feel like it belongs to this stage of life.
On the swaddle question: for babies older than a couple months, I typically skip tight swaddles and go with something looser and more relaxed. It just looks more natural, and it photographs beautifully.
You Don’t Have to Worry About a Thing
Here’s something I want you to hear: you are allowed to show up to this session holding your baby, with no idea what you’re going to wear, and that is completely fine.
My full-service experience is designed so that you don’t have to figure any of this out on your own. Before your session, I’ll walk you through exactly what to wear and how to coordinate your family. I have a client wardrobe you can borrow from, so there’s no need to hunt for the perfect dress. And when you arrive for hair and makeup, you can literally hold your baby the whole time. That’s what I’m here for.
Your only job is to be present with your family. I’ll take care of everything else.

What if I Missed the Newborn Window? You Didn’t Miss Your Chance.
If your baby is a few weeks old, a couple months old, or honestly anywhere in the first year, reach out. We will make it work, and you will love the images.
Because the truth is, missing the newborn window doesn’t mean missing the moment. Babies just keep growing, and these days are going by faster than you think. There is no wrong time to preserve this season… only photos you’ll wish you had taken sooner.
