As a Gainesville photographer, there is truly nothing I love more than a family who is willing to set an early alarm with me, and this sunrise session at Manassas Battlefield was so worth every bit of the pre-dawn wake-up call. We met while the world was still quiet, the grass was still dewy, and that soft, hazy golden light was just beginning to spill across the field. I mean, does it get any dreamier than that?

A family full of fun (and every age in between)
One of my favorite things about this session was the age range. This family had both little ones and older kids, and if you’ve ever been around a mix like that, you know the energy is just different in the best way. The big kids had that easy, grown-up sweetness, while the littlest ones brought all the giggles, the wiggles, and the spontaneous hugs (my personal favorite to catch on camera).
There is something so special about capturing siblings who genuinely love each other, and this crew delivered. One of my favorite frames from the morning is two of the boys wrapped up in the sweetest little hug, completely unprompted. Those are the moments I live for, friend.
The nanny who became family
Here’s a detail that made this session extra meaningful: they brought along their longtime nanny, who has become a true member of the family over the years. I love when families choose to include the people who help raise and love their kids, because that is family, plain and simple. Getting to document those bonds, the ones that aren’t always on the “traditional” family photo list, is such an honor. If someone is part of your everyday life and your heart, they belong in your photos, too.

Why this Gainesville photographer adores Manassas Battlefield
If you’re looking for a location that feels like a dream, Manassas Battlefield is at the very top of my list as a Gainesville photographer. Here’s why I keep coming back to it:
That light. At sunrise, the sun sits low and casts this soft, golden haze over the whole field. It’s the kind of ethereal light I’m always chasing, and this location delivers it beautifully.
The tall grass. All that texture adds so much depth and interest to an image. It frames little faces, catches the light, and makes even the simplest standing pose feel magical.
So much space. With little ones, room to roam is everything. There’s plenty of open field for kids to run, explore, and just be kids, which is exactly the kind of genuine, joyful moment I want to capture. No stiff, forced smiles here.
