Maternity Photos at the National Cathedral Cherry Blossoms

maternity

There’s just something about maternity photos at the National Cathedral cherry blossoms that feels extra magical. Maybe it’s the soft spring blooms paired with the grand, old-world architecture… or maybe it’s that tiny window of peak bloom that makes everything feel a little more special.

This particular session had such a fun layer to it because this couple loves Wuthering Heights. So going into it, we leaned fully into that ultra romantic, slightly windswept, almost storybook feel. Think soft movement, a little drama in the dress, quiet moments that feel like they could be pulled straight from a novel.

The light that evening was so gentle, and the blossoms were just starting to open in the prettiest way. It felt calm, a little moody in the best sense, and incredibly romantic. One of those sessions where everything just slows down and you can really feel the moment.

Why I Love Maternity Photos at the National Cathedral Cherry Blossoms

Even though the Washington National Cathedral only has a few cherry trees, they are truly stunning. And honestly, that’s part of the charm.

You’re not dealing with overwhelming crowds like you would at the Tidal Basin, and the setting feels a little more tucked away and intimate. Between the blooms, the stone architecture, and the pathways of Bishop’s Garden, there’s so much variety in one location.

The National Cathedral cherry blossoms are one of my favorite cherry blossom locations because it gives you both softness and structure. You get that light, airy, romantic feel from the blossoms, but also that timeless, editorial look from the cathedral itself. It just photographs so beautifully.

Best Time to See the Cherry Blossoms at the National Cathedral

Timing really is everything with cherry blossoms. I wrote a post all on the best DC cherry blossom locations for photo sessions you can read here!

The best time to plan maternity photos at the National Cathedral cherry blossoms is usually the week of peak bloom at the Tidal Basin and into the following week. Most years, that lands in the third or fourth week of March.

The National Park Service releases a peak bloom forecast at the beginning of March each year, which is super helpful when planning.

A couple things to keep in mind:

  • Sunrise or sunset both photograph beautifully
  • Sunrise is usually much quieter (which I love for a more peaceful session)
  • The light is soft and flattering at both times

And one quick logistical note: the National Cathedral does require a photography permit, which I always take care of ahead of time for my clients.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

If you’re planning ahead, I typically recommend scheduling your session between 27–34 weeks.

Here’s why:

  • You’ll have a noticeable, beautiful bump
  • You’re usually still feeling pretty good physically
  • It’s before those third trimester aches really set in
  • We have flexibility in case we need to reschedule for weather
  • And there’s a little buffer if baby decides to come early

This timing lines up really well if you’re hoping for maternity photos at the National Cathedral cherry blossoms, since bloom season is short and a bit unpredictable.
