When it comes to Washington DC fall foliage locations, we are sooo lucky around here, because the DMV puts on an absolute show once the weather turns crisp. There’s just something about that golden, glowy light and those warm pops of red and orange that make fall my very favorite time to photograph families (I mean, cozy sweaters AND dreamy light? yes please).
If you’re thinking about fall photos this year, timing is everything. In our area, peak color usually lands somewhere between late October and early November, though Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes (a warm fall can push things a little later, and a dry summer can dull the colors a bit). The real sweet spot for that picture-perfect foliage is often the week or two right around Halloween, which is when my favorite Washington DC fall foliage locations really turn on the charm.
Below are five of my favorite Washington DC fall foliage locations to soak up all that autumn magic. One quick heads up before we dive in: several of these locations require a photography permit, so it’s always best to plan a little ahead and get your session on the calendar early. Fall books up FAST!
1. Brookside Gardens
Brookside Gardens in Wheaton is one of those places that feels like a little escape from the city. It’s a 50-acre public garden tucked inside Wheaton Regional Park, and it has so much variety packed into one spot: a Japanese-style garden, winding woodland paths, peaceful water features, and gorgeous maples that absolutely light up in the fall. Admission is free, but you will need a paid photo permit for a portrait session (they start around $50, and I’d recommend grabbing one at least a couple weeks in advance). It’s the perfect blend of curated and natural, which is exactly the kind of romantic, storybook backdrop I love.
2. Oatlands Historic House and Gardens
If “secret garden” is the vibe you’re after, Oatlands is calling your name. This historic 1804 estate out in Leesburg has a dreamy walled garden, tree-lined paths, sweeping lawns, and even little glimpses of the mountains in the distance. The mix of elegant architecture and lush greenery makes every single corner feel like its own little scene. Oatlands does require a photography permit (currently $125), which goes toward preserving these beautiful grounds, so it’s well worth it. This one is a favorite for families who want something a touch more elevated and timeless.
3. Manassas Battlefield
Okay, Manassas Battlefield is one of my go-to fall locations, and here’s why: those wide-open golden meadows are pure magic in autumn. The tall native grasses turn the most beautiful shades of gold, amber, and rust, and when that low evening sun hits them just right? Swoon. It’s a huge park (we’re talking thousands of acres), so it never feels crowded, and the best part for busy families is that no permit is needed for a small group. We can just park near the visitor’s center and walk right out to the field. Easy, breezy, and beautiful for both morning and evening sessions.
4. DAR Constitution Hall and Constitution Gardens
For families who want that classic DC feel without the chaos of the monuments, this pairing is a dream. DAR Constitution Hall gives you gorgeous columns and timeless architecture, and the bonus is that it’s usually nice and quiet with easy parking right out front (a rarity downtown!). Then, just a short stroll away, Constitution Gardens offers a totally different feel: a peaceful pond, soft willow trees, and wide-open space with the Washington Monument peeking through in the background. Two very different looks in one easy morning. I love being able to give clients that kind of variety in a single session.
5. Bishop’s Garden
Last but certainly not least is the Bishop’s Garden at the Washington National Cathedral, and oh my goodness, it’s a hidden jewel and easily one of the dreamiest Washington DC fall foliage locations in the city. This walled garden was inspired by medieval walled gardens, and it has the most whimsical, tucked-away feel: stone archways, winding little staircases, climbing roses, and ancient trees. The surrounding grounds (including the Olmsted Woods) bring in that classic fall color, while the garden itself feels like stepping straight into a storybook. A photo permit is required here, and it can take a couple weeks to approve, so definitely plan ahead (and since the Cathedral has some ongoing restoration work, it’s worth confirming access when you book). Trust me, it’s worth the little bit of extra planning.
6. Great Falls
If you love a little drama in your backdrop, the Maryland side of Great Falls is absolutely stunning in the fall. Tucked along the C&O Canal and the Potomac, it trades manicured garden rows for something a bit wilder: rushing water, the historic canal towpath, and wooded trails that glow gold and amber once the leaves turn. My favorite little secret here is a quiet beach spot right along the river that I love to use for sessions. It’s so peaceful, tucked away from the crowds, and that soft river light paired with all the fall color makes for the dreamiest, most natural backdrop (and the kids always have a blast exploring). A couple of quick logistics: it’s a National Park, so there’s a per-car entrance fee (around $20, or free if you have an America the Beautiful pass), it’s cashless, and the good news is that a small family session doesn’t need a separate photo permit. Just bring comfy shoes for the little walk down, and aim for right around Halloween for that peak color.
