So instead of asking when is the best time to get family photos in the DMV, it’s really about what kind of experience (and aesthetic) you’re drawn to most.

Spring

Spring in the DMV is what dreamy, whimsical photos are made of.

Cherry blossoms, wisteria, tulips, azaleas… it’s like the entire area turns into a pastel painting for a few weeks. If you’ve ever saved those soft, romantic images on Pinterest, there’s a good chance they were taken in spring.

That said, spring does keep us on our toes a bit.

Temperatures can be unpredictable, especially for those early morning sessions (which many bloom locations require). It’s not uncommon for it to dip into the 40s. We can absolutely work around that with layers and a relaxed approach, but if your kids are especially sensitive to cold, this is something to consider.

Summer

Summer is the most underrated season for photos, and I will happily die on this hill.

We photograph either early in the morning or close to sunset, so the temperatures are usually very manageable. And the location options are incredible. I especially love the monuments, rose gardens, and historic homes this time of year. Everything feels lush, glowy, and alive.

The main drawbacks are humidity (hello, morning hair struggles) and the occasional summer thunderstorm that might mean we reschedule.

But overall? Summer is so good.

Best for: warm glow, variety of locations, more predictable temps

Fall

Fall is the classic choice, especially if you’re thinking ahead to holiday cards.

And yes, the foliage is beautiful. When it hits, it really hits.

But here’s the honest take… fall can actually be one of the trickier seasons.

Just like spring, temperatures can swing quite a bit. And the window for peak foliage is short. We’re usually looking at about 1 to 2 weeks from late October into early November. Miss that window, and the look changes quickly.

If you’re set on those rich autumn colors, fall is absolutely worth it. But if you’re flexible on aesthetic and want a smoother experience for little ones, summer often wins here.

Winter

Winter sessions are a little different, but in the best way.

I typically avoid outdoor sessions this time of year because it’s just too cold, especially for little ones. But indoor sessions? They can be incredibly beautiful.

Think art museums in the city with soft, romantic light. Cozy in-home sessions where you don’t even have to leave the house. Or a clean, simple studio if you love that timeless white backdrop.

There’s something really special about winter photos. They feel slower, more intimate, and honestly a little nostalgic.
